All aboard the Counting Express! 🚂🌈
Learning to count is one of the first exciting milestones in a child’s educational journey. From counting fingers and toes to spotting numbers around the house, children discover that numbers are part of their everyday world.
But here’s something parents should know: Learning numbers doesn’t have to feel like a lesson. It can feel like an adventure!
That’s exactly why Layla and Nancy have hopped aboard their colorful train for a brand-new counting adventure through Los Angeles.
Today, we’re sharing five playful ways to help your little learner explore numbers 1 through 10, develop early math skills, and build confidence along the way.
🚂 1. Start with a Counting Adventure
Children often learn through repetition, movement, and playful experiences.
Instead of asking your child to memorize numbers, introduce counting through an exciting story or activity.
In Layla and Nancy’s Counting Express, our adventurous bulldog sisters travel along the railroad tracks toward downtown Los Angeles, discovering giant numbers and colorful surprises along the way.
From bouncing beach balls to magical candy explosions, each number brings something new to discover!
Try this with your child:
Watch the counting adventure together.
Encourage your child to say each number aloud.
Hold up fingers to match the number on the screen.
Pause and ask, “What number comes next?”

The goal isn’t to get every number right the first time. It’s to make learning exciting enough that your child wants to try again.
🍎 2. Turn Everyday Objects into Counting Games
You don’t need expensive educational toys to teach counting. Some of the best learning opportunities are already sitting around your home.
Try counting familiar objects together:
🍓 3 strawberries at snack time
🧸 4 stuffed animals on the bed
🚗 5 toy cars on the floor
🖍️ 6 colorful crayons
🐾 8 little paw prints on a drawing
Parent tip: Ask your child to touch or move one object each time they say a number.
This helps children begin understanding that each number represents a specific quantity, not just a word in a sequence.
🌈 3. Practice Number Recognition Through Play
Being able to count aloud and recognizing written numbers are two different skills.
A child might confidently say “one, two, three, four, five” but still be learning what the written number 5 looks like.
That’s perfectly normal!
Make number recognition fun by turning it into a game.
Try a Number Hunt!
Write the numbers 1 through 10 on separate pieces of paper and place them around the room.
Then ask your child:
“Can you find the number 3?”
“Where is the number 7 hiding?”
“Can you put the numbers in order?”
For an extra challenge, encourage your child to collect the matching number of toys for each card.
This combines movement, recognition, and early counting practice in one playful activity.
🐶 4. Let Your Child Become the Teacher
Here’s a fun idea: Let your little one teach Layla and Nancy how to count!
Children can reinforce their understanding by explaining something to someone else, even if that someone is a favorite cartoon character or stuffed animal.
After watching our Counting Express adventure, ask:
💜 “Can you help Layla count five toys?”
💕 “Nancy forgot what comes after seven! Can you help her?”
🚂 “How many train wheels can you count?”
Give your child time to answer, and celebrate their effort.
If they make a mistake, simply count together again.
Remember: Confidence grows when children feel comfortable trying, making mistakes, and discovering the answers.
⭐ 5. Keep Counting Sessions Short, Fun, and Consistent
Young children don’t necessarily need long lessons to develop early math skills.
Short, playful counting opportunities throughout the day can be more engaging than sitting down for extended practice.
Here are a few moments to make counting part of your family’s routine:
Morning: Count five steps on the way to breakfast.
Snack time: Count crackers, berries, or apple slices.
Playtime: Line up 10 toy cars or blocks.
Afternoon: Go on a neighborhood number hunt.
Bedtime: Count 10 imaginary stars together.
Even a few minutes of playful practice can provide valuable opportunities to build familiarity with numbers.
The important thing is to make counting a positive experience that fits naturally into your child’s day.
🎉 Why Learning Through Play Matters
Early math development involves much more than memorizing numbers.
As children play with numbers, they’re beginning to explore important concepts such as:
Number recognition: Identifying written numerals.
Counting in order: Learning the correct number sequence.
One-to-one correspondence: Matching one number word to one object.
Quantity: Understanding how many objects a number represents.
Problem-solving: Figuring out what comes next.
These skills provide a foundation for future mathematical learning.
And when learning is combined with imagination, stories, and familiar characters, children have more opportunities to practice those skills in meaningful ways.
